Code 7-4, Rear Solenoid Circuit (Open)

  1. Disconnect 10-pin connector from solenoids. Connector is located on right side of engine compartment, near shock tower.
  2. Using DVOM, measure resistance of solenoid wires. Measure between Red/White and Brown/White wires and between Yellow/White and Brown/White wires. If resistance is 1-3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 1-3 ohms, solenoid is defective.
  3. Disconnect 12-pin connector from control unit. Check for continuity in Red/White and Yellow/White wires between 12-pin and 10-pin connectors. If continuity exists in both wires, go to next step. If continuity does not exist in either wire, repair open in wire having no continuity.
  4. Check for continuity in Red/White and Yellow/White wires between 12-pin connector and ground. If continuity does not exist in both wires, go to next step. If continuity exists in either wire, repair short in wire having continuity.
  5. Remove and test rear fail-safe relay. See RELAY TEST  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace relay if it is defective. If relay is okay, check for continuity between Black wire of fail-safe relay connector and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check fail-safe relay ground connection, located behind right kick panel. If ground connection is okay, repair open in Black wire.
  6. Check for continuity in Blue/Black wire between solenoid connector and rear fail-safe relay connector. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Blue/Black wire. If continuity exists, check for loose control unit connectors. If connectors are okay, install a known good control unit and retest.
