Alternator Output Test

  1. Remove alternator connector. Turn ignition on. On Legend, battery voltage should exist between terminal "S" (Yellow/Blue wire) and body ground. On all models, battery voltage should exist between terminal IG (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. See Figure, Figure or Figure .
  2. If voltage is present, go to step 3). If voltage is not present, check fuses. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION . If fuses are okay, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between fuse box and voltage regulator.
  3. Test system using an alternator tester with integral carbon pile (to apply electrical load to system). Operate engine at 2000 RPM. Ensure cooling fan is off. Apply load with carbon pile so voltage drops to no less than 12 volts. If amperage is 40 amps or more, charging system is okay. If amperage is less than 40 amps, go to FULL FIELD TEST .
