Retrieving Codes

NOTE: Before starting tests, ensure engine is in good mechanical condition and adjusted to specifications.

CHECK ENGINE light may come on indicating a hard or intermittent failure. Locate diagnostic connector behind glove box. See Fig 1 . Connect diagnostic connector terminals with jumper wire. Turn ignition on. Observe CHECK ENGINE light. Light indicates a system failure code by number of blinks.

Single-digit failure codes (1-9) are indicated by individual short blinks. Double-digit failure codes (10-59) are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. The number of long blinks equal the first digit. The number of short blinks equal the second digit. Combine long blinks and short blinks together to determine double-digit failure code(s). See TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  .

If codes other than those listed are indicated, substitute a known good ECU, and recheck. If codes do not reappear, replace ECU.

NOTE: For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article in this section. For vacuum diagrams, refer to the VACUUM DIAGRAMS article in this section.
