Code 21: Spool Solenoid Valve (1.7L)
- Turn ignition off. Remove BACK UP fuse from underhood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Warm engine until cooling fan comes on. Road test vehicle. While in 1st gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 6000 RPM, and hold for at least 2 seconds. Repeat procedure 3 times. Check ECU for fault codes. See RETRIEVING CODES . If Code 21 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at spool valve and ECU connector.
- Test drive vehicle and retest. If Code 21 is present, turn ignition off. Disconnect spool valve 1-wire connector. Check resistance between connector terminal and body ground. If 14-30 ohms is not present, replace spool valve. If 14-30 ohms is present, connect ECU Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECU and ECU connector. See Figure .
- Check for continuity between spool valve connector and test terminal A4. If continuity is not present, repair open in wire between spool valve and ECU connector. If continuity is present, check for continuity between spool valve connector terminal and body ground.
- If continuity is present, repair short in wire between spool valve and ECU connector. If continuity is not present, substitute a known good ECU, and recheck. If condition goes away, replace original ECU.
