Code 22: Valve Timing Oil Pressure Switch (1.7L)
- Turn ignition off. Remove BACK UP fuse from underhood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Warm engine until cooling fan comes on. Road test vehicle. While in 1st gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 6000 RPM, and hold for at least 2 seconds. Repeat procedure 3 times. Check ECU for fault codes. See RETRIEVING CODES . If Code 22 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at valve timing oil pressure switch and ECU connector.
- Test drive vehicle and retest. If Code 21 is present, turn ignition off. Disconnect switch 2-wire connector. Check for continuity between Black wire terminal and body ground. If continuity is not present, repair open in Black wire between switch connector and body ground. If continuity is present, connect ECU Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECU and ECU connector. See Figure .
- Check for continuity between test terminal D6 and Blue/Black wire terminal. If continuity is not present, repair open in Blue/Black wire between switch connector and ECU. If continuity is present, check for continuity between test terminal D6 and body ground. If continuity is present, repair short in Blue/Black wire between switch connector and ECU. See Figure . If continuity is not present, go to step 4).
- Remove 10-mm plug and attach oil pressure gauge. With engine at normal operating temperature, check oil pressure at 1000 RPM, 3000 RPM and 5000 RPM. If pressure is below 7 psi (0.5 kg/cm2 ), replace spool valve. If pressure is 7 psi (0.5 kg/cm2 ) or more, check for continuity between switch terminals.
- If continuity is not present, replace valve timing oil pressure switch. If continuity is present, remove spool valve connector. Connect battery voltage to spool valve connector terminal. Start engine and check oil pressure at 5000 RPM.
- If oil pressure is less than 57 psi (4 kg/cm2 ), replace spool valve. If oil pressure is 57 psi (4 kg/cm2 ) or more, check continuity between switch terminals at 5000 RPM. If continuity is not present, replace oil pressure switch. If continuity is present, substitute a known good ECU, and recheck. If condition goes away, replace original ECU.
