TOO MUCH OIL IN CRANKCASE
In any engine, too much oil in the crankcase causes friction or viscous drag on the crankshaft that can lead to all sorts of problems like:
- Idle vibration and loss of power from low idle speed and the extra drag.
- Low engine revs (The engine may not rev higher than 3,500 rpm.)
- Late upshifts because the engine can't reach the shift point speeds programmed into the PCM/TCM.
If a customer has any of these complaints, check the oil level of the engine and trans before you do anything else; it could save you a lot of diagnostic time.
OVERFILLING CRANKCASE
So how could anyone overfill a crankcase? It's not too common, but based on calls to Tech Line and Customer Relations. the problem usually happens when do-it-yourselfers remove the transmission drain plug when attempting to change the engine oil. Then, they reinstall the trans drain plug and add oil to the engine. The result is no fluid in the trans, and a crankcase with three or four quarts in it.
