Code 17: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove No. 15 (ACG) fuse from underdash fuse box for 10 seconds to reset ECU. Road test vehicle. While in 2nd gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 4000 RPM, and then with throttle fully closed decelerate to 1500 RPM.
  2. Check ECU for fault codes. See RETRIEVING CODES  . If Code 17 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at ECU connector and VSS connector. Test drive vehicle and retest.
  3. If Code 17 is present, raise and support vehicle. Connect ECU Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECU and ECU connector. See Figure . Place transaxle in Neutral. Turn ignition on. Slowly rotate left front wheel and measure voltage between test terminals A26 (-) and C2 (+). If voltage pulses 0-5 volts, substitute a known good ECU, and retest. If specified voltage is now present, replace original ECU.
  4. If voltage does not pulse 0-5 volts in step 3), repair short in Yellow/Red wire between ECU terminal C2 (+) and VSS. If wire is okay, replace VSS. If voltage still does not pulse 0-5 volts, substitute a known good ECU, and recheck. If symptom/condition goes away, replace original ECU.
