Low-Speed Assist

  1. Check fluid level and belt tension. Start and idle engine. Turn steering wheel lock to lock several times to warm fluid. Attach a spring tension scale to steering wheel at outer end of spoke.
  2. Ensure vehicle is on a clean, dry surface. With engine at idle, pull tension scale. Read scale as soon as wheels begin to move. Reading should be a maximum of 7.1 lbs. (3.2 kg).
  3. If reading does not meet specification, stop engine and disconnect hose between control unit and speed sensor at sensor. Plug hose and sensor fitting.
  4. Start and idle engine. Measure pull as described in steps 1) and 2). If scale reading is 7.1 lbs. (3.2 kg) or less, replace speed sensor. If scale reading is higher, check steering rack and power steering pump.
