Power Rack & Pinion: Disassembly
- Remove valve body from housing. See VALVE BODY
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Carefully clamp steering gear in soft-jawed vise. Loosen dust boot clamps. Pull dust boots away from steering gear. Bend back tie rod lock washer tabs. Using 22-mm wrench to hold rack and 17-mm wrench on tie rod, remove tie rod from rack. See Fig 1

- Push right end of rack into cylinder to prevent rack from being scratched. Loosen rack guide screw lock nut. See Figure
. Remove rack guide screw, "O" ring, spring, and rack guide. Remove snap ring from bottom of gear housing. Tap pinion from gear housing with soft-faced hammer. Inspect pinion lower ball bearing for excessive play. Replace as necessary.
- Remove 4 bolts at end of cylinder housing. Separate rack from cylinder housing. Remove "O" ring, back-up ring, rack bushing "A", and cylinder spring. To avoid damaging cylinder housing, use a plastic or wooden tool to remove end seal from housing. Remove cylinder, seal retainer, cylinder cap, and rack from gear housing. Remove retainer washer.
- Remove housing cap retaining bolts. Remove pinion dust seal retainer and "O" ring from gear housing. Remove pinion seal from pinion dust seal retainer. Inspect pinion upper bearing for excessive play. If pinion bearing is okay, go to step 7). If pinion bearing is to be replaced, go to next step.
- Remove 30-mm snap ring from pinion holder. See Fig 2
. Remove pinion holder and pinion upper bearing from gear housing. Inspect needle bearings in pinion holder and gear housing. Replace as necessary. Replace needle bearings as a set. If needle bearings are okay, pack with grease and reuse.

- Pack a new pinion upper bearing with grease. Drive bearing into gear housing with sealed side facing out, using Driver (07749-0010000) and Attachment (07746-0010300). Install pinion holder into gear housing. Install snap ring with tapered side facing away from housing. Align snap ring ends with flat part of pinion holder.
- Remove cylinder and seal retainer from rack. Remove "O" rings and snap ring from seal retainer. Remove cylinder cap from seal retainer. Remove "O" rings from cylinder cap. Remove bushing clamp from seal retainer. Remove rack bushing "B" and cylinder end seal with back-up ring.
- Carefully pry piston seal ring and "O" ring from rack. Clean all parts, and inspect them for wear or damage. In addition to standard overhaul kit replacement parts, replace any other parts showing excessive wear or damage.
