Code 17: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove ACG fuse (No. 15, 7.5-amp) from underdash fuse box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Road test vehicle. While in 2nd gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 4000 RPM and then, with throttle fully closed, decelerate to 1500 RPM.
  2. Check ECM for fault codes. If Code 17 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at ECM, VSS and wiring harness connectors. Test drive vehicle and retest.
  3. If Code 17 is present, raise and support vehicle. Connect ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECM and ECM wiring harness connectors. See Figure . Place transaxle in Neutral. Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel and slowly rotate left front wheel. Measure voltage between test terminals C2 (+) and D22 (-). If voltage pulses 0-12 volts, replace ECM and retest.
  4. If voltage does not pulse 0-12 volts, turn ignition off and disconnect connector "C" from ECM. Turn ignition on. Rotate left front wheel. If voltage does not pulse 0-12 volts, repair short or open in Yellow/Red wire between ECM terminal C2 (+) and VSS. If wire is okay, replace VSS. If voltage pulses 0-12 volts, replace ECM and retest.
