Code 4-2, Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor

  1. Disconnect left front wheel speed sensor 2-pin connector. Measure resistance between speed sensor harness connector terminals. If resistance is not 600-900 ohms, replace speed sensor. If resistance is 600-900 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Check continuity between Green/Blue wire terminal of sensor harness connector and ground. If continuity exists, replace sensor. If continuity does not exist, disconnect control unit 22-pin connector. Check continuity between Green/Blue (Green/Orange or Green/Blue on hatchback) wire terminal of control unit 22-pin connector and ground.
  3. If continuity exists, Green/Blue wire or Green/Orange wire between control unit and speed sensor is shorted to ground. If continuity does not exist, check continuity between Brown (Light Green/Black or Brown on hatchback) wire terminal of control unit 22-pin connector and ground.
  4. If continuity exists, Brown wire or Light Green/Black wire between control unit and speed sensor is shorted to ground. If continuity does not exist, reconnect speed sensor 2-pin connector. Measure resistance between Brown (Light Green/Black on hatchback) wire and Green/Blue (Green/Orange on hatchback) wire terminals of control unit 22-pin connector.
  5. If resistance is 600-900 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance is not 600-900 ohms, connect jumper wire between Green/Blue wire or Green/Orange wire terminal of control unit 22-pin connector and ground. Disconnect left front speed sensor 2-pin connector.
  6. Check continuity between speed sensor Green/Blue wire or Green/Orange wire terminal and ground. If continuity exists, repair open Brown wire or Light Green/Black wire between control unit and speed sensor. If continuity does not exist, repair open Green/Blue wire or Green/Orange wire between control unit and speed sensor.
  7. Check left front speed sensor air gap and correct if necessary. See WHEEL SENSOR AIR GAP SPECIFICATIONS table under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If gap is okay, go to next step if ABS tester is available, or step 10) if ABS tester is not available.
  8. Connect ABS tester to inspection 6-pin connector. See Figure . Start engine. Turn mode selector on ABS tester to mode 4. Firmly depress and hold brake pedal down. Push START TEST switch.
  9. Have assistant manually rotate left front wheel. If wheel cannot be rotated, replace modulator. If wheels can be rotated, problem is intermittent. Test drive vehicle. If symptom reappears, replace control unit.
  10. Disconnect modulator 14-pin connector. Connect battery positive terminal to Red/Blue wire and Yellow/Blue wire terminals of modulator 14-pin connector. Connect battery negative terminal and an on-off switch to White/Blue wire and Gray/Blue wire terminals of 14-pin connector.
  11. Firmly depress brake pedal, and momentarily turn on switch to apply ABS function to left front wheel. Have assistant manually rotate left front wheel. If wheel cannot be rotated, replace modulator. If wheel can be rotated, problem is intermittent. Test drive vehicle. If symptom reappears, replace control unit.
