Code 22: VTEC Pressure Switch (1.8L GS-R)
- Turn ignition off. Remove BACK-UP fuse (7.5-amp) from underhood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Warm engine until cooling fan comes on. Road test vehicle. While in 1st gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 6000 RPM and hold for at least 2 seconds. Repeat procedure 3 times. Check ECM for fault codes. If Code 22 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System (VTEC) pressure switch and ECM connector.
- If Code 22 is present, turn ignition off. Disconnect switch 2-pin connector. Check for continuity between Black wire terminal and body ground. If continuity is not present, repair open in Black wire between switch connector and body ground. If continuity is present, connect ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECM and ECM connectors. See Figure.
- Check for continuity between test terminal D6 and Blue/Black wire terminal. If continuity is not present, repair open in Blue/Black wire between VTEC pressure switch connector and ECM. If continuity is present, check for continuity between test terminal D6 and body ground. If continuity is present, repair short in Blue/Black wire between VTEC presure switch connector and ECM. See Figure. If continuity is not present, go to step 4).
- Remove 10-mm plug and attach oil pressure gauge. With engine at normal operating temperature, check oil pressure at 1000, 3000 and 5000 RPM. If pressure is below 7 psi (0.5 kg/cm2 ), replace VTEC solenoid valve. If pressure is 7 psi (0.5 kg/cm2 ) or more, check for continuity between switch terminals.
- If continuity is not present, replace VTEC pressure switch. If continuity is present, remove VTEC solenoid valve connector. Connect battery voltage to VTEC solenoid valve connector terminal. Start engine. Check oil pressure at 5000 RPM.
- If oil pressure is less than 57 psi (4 kg/cm2 ), replace VTEC solenoid valve. If oil pressure is 57 psi (4 kg/cm2 ) or more, check continuity between VTEC pressure switch terminals at 5000 RPM. If continuity is present, replace VTEC pressure switch. If continuity is not present, replace ECM and retest.
