Code 17: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove BACK-UP fuse (10-amp) from underhood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Road test vehicle. While in 2nd gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 4000 RPM and then, with throttle fully closed, decelerate to 1500 RPM.
  2. Check ECM for fault codes. If Code 17 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections at ECM, VSS and wiring harness connectors. Test drive vehicle and retest.
  3. If Code 17 is present, raise and support vehicle. Connect ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECM and ECM connectors. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel. Slowly rotate left front wheel. Measure voltage between test terminals A26 (-) and B10 (+). If voltage pulses between 0-12 volts, replace ECM and retest.
  4. If voltage does not pulse 0-12 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect test harness "B" connector from ECM, leaving wiring harness connected. Turn ignition on. Slowly rotate left front wheel while measuring voltage between test terminals A26 and B10.
  5. If voltage does not pulse 0-12 volts, repair open or short in Orange wire between ECM connector terminal B10 (+) and VSS or cruise control unit. If wire is okay, replace VSS. If voltage pulses 0-12 volts, replace ECM and retest.
