Code 2-1: Parking Brake Switch

  1. Turn ignition on. Set parking brake lever. If BRAKE warning light comes on go to step 5). If BRAKE warning light does not come on, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect gauge assembly 13-pin connector. Measure voltage between Yellow wire terminal of 13-pin harness connector and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open Yellow wire between back-up light fuse and gauge assembly.
  3. Remove instrument panel gauge assembly. See appropriate article:

Check BRAKE warning light bulb. Replace as necessary. Reconnect gauge assembly 13-pin and 16-pin connectors if disconnected. Connect jumper wire between Green/Red wire terminal of 16-pin connector and ground.

4) If BRAKE warning light does not come on, replace gauge assembly printed circuit board. If light comes on, repair open Green/Red wire between gauge assembly and parking brake switch.

5) Release parking brake lever. If BRAKE warning light does not go off, go to step 7). If light goes off, test drive vehicle at minimum speed of 6 MPH for at least 30 seconds. If ABS light comes on, go to next step. If light does not come on, code was probably set because vehicle was driven with parking brake applied for more than 30 seconds.

6) Measure voltage between Green/Red wire terminal of ABS control unit 26-pin harness connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, replace ABS control unit. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open Green/Red wire between gauge assembly and ABS control unit.

7) Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. If brake fluid level is correct, go to next step. If fluid level is not correct, check front brake pad thickness and brake system for leaks. If no problem is found, fill master cylinder reservoir to the correct level.

8) Disconnect brake fluid level switch connectors. If BRAKE warning light goes off, replace brake fluid level switch. If light does not go off, check parking brake switch and replace if necessary. If switch is okay, disconnect ABS control unit 26-pin connector.

9) If BRAKE warning light goes off, replace ABS control unit. If light does not go off, Green/Red wire between BRAKE warning light, parking brake switch and brake fluid level switch is shorted to ground.
