Code 6 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove BACK-UP (7.5-amp) fuse from underhood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Start engine. Observe MIL. If light is off, problem is intermittent. Inspect for poor or loose connections at coolant sensor, shock tower connectors, ECM, and Transmission Control Module (TCM), if equipped. Test-drive vehicle, then retest system.
  2. If MIL is on and indicates Code 6, operate engine until cooling fan comes on. Turn engine off. Unplug connector from coolant sensor. Measure resistance between sensor terminals. If resistance is not 200-400 ohms, replace coolant sensor.
  3. If resistance is 200-400 ohms, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between Red/White wire terminal (+) and body ground. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 5 volts, go to step 6).
  4. Turn ignition off. On models with A/T, unplug 22-pin connector from TCM. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at Red/White wire terminal. If voltage is about 5 volts, temporarily substitute known good TCM, then retest system. If voltage is not about 5 volts, turn ignition off and reconnect TCM. On all models, attach connector "D" of ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) to ECM, leaving vehicle wiring harness disconnected. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test terminals D13 (+) and D22 (-).
  5. If voltage is about 5 volts, repair open or short in Red/White wire between ECM terminal D13 and coolant sensor. If voltage is not about 5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
  6. Measure voltage between Red/White (+) and Green/Blue (-) wire terminals. If voltage is not about 5 volts, repair open in Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and coolant sensor. If voltage is about 5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
