Code 17 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove ACG fuse (No. 15, 7.5-amp) from underdash fuse box for 10 seconds to reset ECM. Road-test vehicle. While in 2nd gear, accelerate until engine speed reaches 4000 RPM and then, with throttle fully closed, decelerate to 1500 RPM.
  2. Retrieve codes. If Code 17 does not appear, problem is intermittent. Inspect for poor connections at ECM, VSS, and wiring harness connectors. Test-drive vehicle and retest.
  3. If Code 17 exists, raise and support vehicle. Connect ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A ) between ECM and ECM harness. See Figure . Place transaxle in Neutral. Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel. Slowly rotate left front wheel while measuring voltage between test terminals A26 (-) and C2 (+). If voltage pulses 0-5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
  4. If voltage does not pulse 0-5 volts, turn ignition off. Unplug connector "C" from ECM. Turn ignition on. Rotate left front wheel. If voltage does not pulse 0-5 volts, repair short or open in Yellow/Red wire between ECM terminal C2 (+) and VSS. If wire is okay, replace VSS. If voltage pulses 0-5 volts, temporarily substitute known good ECM, then retest system.
