Valve Clearance

  1. Ensure cylinder head temperature is less than 100°F (38°C). Remove cylinder head cover, timing belt covers and distributor cap. Loosen valve adjusting screw locknut and adjust valve clearance. Tighten locknut and recheck valve clearance. Tighten valve adjusting screw locknut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). After adjusting valves, ensure crankshaft pulley bolt is tightened to 130 ft. lbs. (176 N.m).
  2. Align pointer on timing belt lower cover with TDC (White mark) on crankshaft pulley. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be at top of cam gears. Distributor rotor should point to No. 1 spark plug wire on cap. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 1.
  3. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 3 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be on exhaust side. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 3.
  4. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 4 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be pointing straight down. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 4.
  5. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 2 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be on intake side. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 2.
