Tilt/Extend-Retract Motor Test

  1. Remove steering column covers. See STEERING COLUMN COVERS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect each motor wiring connector. See Fig 1.
  2. Connect battery positive cable to connector terminal No. 3 and battery negative cable to terminal No. 1 of tilt motor. Verify steering column tilts up. If steering column does not tilt up, replace faulty tilt motor. If steering column tilts up, go to next step.
  3. Reverse battery leads at tilt motor and verify steering column tilts down. If steering column does not tilt down, replace faulty tilt motor. If steering column tilts down, go to next step.
  4. Connect battery positive cable to connector terminal No. 1 and battery negative cable to terminal No. 2 of extend-retract motor. If motor does not move, disconnect battery terminals and replace faulty motor. If motor moves, reverse battery terminals and verify motor moves in opposite direction. If motor fails to run or does not reverse direction, replace faulty motor.
