Generator/Regulator Output Test

  1. Test system using a generator tester with carbon pile. Hook up tester according to manufacturer's instructions. Start engine and operate at 3000 RPM until radiator fan comes on, then let engine idle. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and hold. Observe voltmeter on carbon pile. If reading is greater than 15.1 volts, replace voltage regulator. If reading is less than 15.1 volts, go to next step.
  2. Return engine to idle. Ensure all accessories are off. On 2.5TL, connect inductive pick-up over generator terminal "B" (battery terminal wire). See Figure . Ensure arrow on inductive pick-up points away from generator. On Integra, zero ammeter on carbon pile and connect inductive pick-up over negative battery cable. Ensure arrow points toward negative battery terminal. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and hold. Observe voltmeter. If reading is 13.5 volts or greater, go to next step. If reading is less than 13.5 volts, test and repair generator components as necessary. Repeat voltage test.
  3. While observing ammeter, apply load with generator tester carbon pile until battery voltage drops to 12-13.5 volts. If less than 75 amps exist (70 amps on Integra), go to next step. If 75 amps (70 amps or more on Integra) or more exist, charging system is functioning properly.
CAUTION: Voltage will increase rapidly during full field test. DO NOT allow voltage to exceed 18 volts. Damage to electrical system may result.
  4. With engine speed still at 2000 RPM, full field generator. Attach a probe to the full field probe of the carbon pile. Insert test probe into full field access hole, located on back of generator. See Figure . On 2.5TL, if 75 amps or more exist, go to next step. On Integra, if 70 amps or more exist, replace voltage regulator. If less than specified amperage exists, test and repair generator components. See BENCH TESTING  .
  5. On 2.5TL, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect generator 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and generator 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, replace voltage regulator. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire.
