Charging System Light Test

  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Charging system light should illuminate. If charging system light illuminates, go to next step. If charging system light does not illuminate, check for faulty bulb or blown GENERATOR, SPEED SENSOR (7.5-amp) fuse. GENERATOR, SPEED SENSOR fuse is located in underdash fuse/relay box. If fuse and bulb are okay, check for open in White/Blue wire or Black/Yellow wire. Repair or replace components as necessary.
  2. Start engine. Charging system light should turn off. If charging system light stays on, go to next step. If charging system light turns off, check generator and regulator. See GENERATOR/REGULATOR OUTPUT TEST  .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 4-pin connector (3-pin connector for Canadian models). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire at generator 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (3-pin connector, terminal No. 2 for Canadian models). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between generator and underdash fuse/relay box.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ground generator harness connector terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If charging system light illuminates, turn ignition switch to OFF position and go to next step. If charging system light does not illuminate, repair open in White/Blue wire between instrument cluster and generator, or Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and underdash fuse/relay box.
  5. Remove ground. Recheck charging system light operation. If light remains on, repair short to ground in White/Blue wire between instrument cluster and generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Recheck system operation. If light goes off, test and repair generator components. See BENCH TESTING  .
