No-Load Test
- Disconnect wire from starter solenoid "M" terminal. Clamp starter firmly in a vise. Using wire equivalent to battery cables, connect one jumper wire between positive battery terminal and starter terminal "S" and a second jumper wire between negative battery terminal and starter body. Connect a third jumper wire between negative battery terminal and starter terminal "B". DO NOT leave battery connected for more than 10 seconds. Starter pinion should extend. Remove jumper wire from starter terminal "B". Starter pinion should not retract. Remove jumper wire from starter body. Starter pinion should retract. If starter pinion does not operate as specified, repair or replace starter pinion as necessary. If starter pinion operates as specified, go to next step.
- Reconnect wire to starter solenoid "M" terminal. Connect voltmeter and ammeter to battery. Connect tachometer to engine. Connect one jumper wire between negative battery terminal and starter housing and a second jumper wire between positive battery terminal and starter terminal "B". Connect a third jumper wire between positive battery terminal and starter terminal "S". Connect ammeter inductive pickup to second and third jumper wire with current flow arrow pointing toward starter. Check starter voltage and amperage, and starter RPM. See NO-LOAD SPECIFICATIONS
table. If no-load test is not to specification, repair or replace starter as needed.
