Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS): 3.5RL

  1. Check fuse No. 13 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Disconnect VSS 3-pin harness connector on top rear of transaxle. Connect VSS Test Harness (07LAJ-PT30200A) to VSS 3-pin harness connector only. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage between ground and White test harness clip. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Yellow wire between VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and fuse No. 13 (7.5-amp).
  2. Disconnect White test harness clip. Connect Green test harness clip to positive voltmeter probe. Measure voltage between ground and Green test harness clips. If 5 volts or more is present, go to next step. If less than 5 volts is present, repair short in Blue/White wire between PCM 16-pin harness connector terminal No. 13 and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3, cruise control unit 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 12, steering column control unit 12-pin harness connector terminal No. 11, driver's multiplex control unit 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 4, and/or navigation control unit 8-pin harness connector terminal No. 6. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect test harness. Disconnect PCM 22-pin harness connector. See Figure . Check for continuity between PCM 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 22 (Green/Black wire) and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Blue wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green/Blue or Green/Black wires between PCM 22-pin harness connector and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1.
  4. Turn ignition off. Raise and support front of vehicle. Place transaxle in Neutral and turn ignition on. Block left front wheel. While observing voltmeter, slowly rotate right front wheel. If voltage pulses between zero and about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse between zero and about 5 volts, replace VSS.
  5. Disconnect instrument panel 22-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and instrument panel gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 18 (Blue/White wire). While observing voltmeter, slowly rotate other front wheel. If voltage pulses, replace speedometer. If voltage does not pulse, repair open in Blue/White wire between VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 and instrument panel gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 18.
