Vehicle Speed Sensor: 3.5RL

NOTE: Before troubleshooting VSS, connect scan tool to DLC and check for stored DTC P0720. If present, go to DTC P0720: COUNTERSHAFT SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  1. Check No. 13 METER (7.5-amp) fuse in underdash fuse/relay box. Disconnect VSS 3-pin harness connector on top rear of transaxle. Connect VSS Test Harness (07LAJ-PT30200A) to VSS 3-pin harness connector only. Connect positive probe of DVOM to White test harness clip and negative probe to ground. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch on. Check for battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Yellow wire between VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and No. 13 SUN ROOF (7.5-amp) fuse.
  2. Disconnect White test harness clip. Connect Green test harness clip to positive DVOM probe. Measure voltage between ground and Green test harness clips. If 5 volts or more is present, go to next step. If less than 5 volts is present, repair short in Blue/White wire between PCM 16-pin harness B connector terminal No. 13 and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3, cruise control unit 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 12, steering column control unit 12-pin harness connector terminal No. 11, driver's multiplex control unit 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 4, and/or navigation control unit 8-pin harness connector terminal No. 6. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  3. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect test harness. Disconnect PCM 22-pin harness D connector. See Figure . Check for continuity between PCM 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 22 (Green/Black wire) and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Blue wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green/Blue or Green/Black wires between PCM 22-pin harness D connector terminal No. 22 and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1.
  4. Turn ignition switch off. Raise and support front of vehicle. Place transaxle in Neutral and turn ignition on. While observing DVOM, slowly rotate front wheel with opposite wheel blocked. If voltage pulses between zero and about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse between zero and about 5 volts, replace VSS.
  5. Disconnect gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 18 (Blue/White wire). While observing DVOM, slowly rotate front wheel with opposite wheel blocked. If voltage pulses between zero and about 5 volts, replace speedometer. If voltage does not pulse between zero and about 5 volts, repair open in Blue/White wire between VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 and gauge assembly 22-pin harness connector terminal No. 18.
