DTC P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem

NOTE: If DTCs P0117 or P0118 are also stored, troubleshoot these codes first.
NOTE: As engine coolant temperature increases, ECT sensor resistance decreases.
  1. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM, with no load (in park or neutral), until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Using scan tool, check ECT sensor data. If indicated temperature is 176-212°F (80-100°C) on MDX or 176-200°F (80-93°C) on 3.2CL and 3.2TL, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check thermostat and cooling system. Repair as necessary. If indicated temperature is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Check thermostat and cooling system. Repair as necessary. If cooling system is okay, replace ECT sensor.
