How to use this Service Information .
- Ignition Timing - Inspect
■ Preconditions
- No DTCs Set
- Engine Warmed Up
- Idle Speed Normal Condition
- HDS Connected
■ Procedure/Specifications
1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
3. Start the engine.
4. Connect the timing light to the service loop (white tape). (Figure 1)

5. Aim the light toward the crankshaft pulley (A). Check the ignition timing under a no load condition (headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, and air conditioner are turned off). (Figure 2)
NOTE: Check the ignition timing while aligning the upper pointer (B) and the lower pointer (C) of the cam chain case as shown. (Figure 2)Normal Conditions (Figure 2)
Ignition Timing Standard 2+/-2 deg. ATDC (RED mark (D)) at idle in P or N(Conversion value by HDS: -2 +/-2 deg.) Figure 2
■ Result
- If the measurement is not within specifications, check the camshaft timing . If the camshaft timing is OK, update the PCM - Refer to: PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM , then recheck. If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM .
