Ignition Timing Inspection (2.0L Engine): Inspection
NOTICE:
If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before continuing with this inspection.
- Ignition Timing - Inspect
Preconditions
- No DTCs Set
- Engine Warmed Up
NOTE: Warm up the engine by raising the engine speed around 3, 000 rpm until the cooling fan(s) comes on.
- Idle Speed Normal Condition - Refer to: Idle Speed Inspection(2.0L Engine)
- HDS Connected
Procedure/Specifications
1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
2. Start the engine.
3. Connect the timing light (a) to the service loop (white tape) (b). Check the ignition timing under the following conditions.
NOTICE:
Check the ignition timing while aligning the upper pointer (c) and the lower pointer (d) of the cam chain case as shown.

- At idle in P or N
The pointer and red mark should align. (2+/-2 deg. ATDC (Conversion value by HDS: -2 +/-2 deg.)) d Lower Pointer e RED Mark Result
- If the measurement is not within specifications, check the camshaft timing - Refer to:
Camshaft Timing Inspection(2.0L Engine)
.
If the camshaft timing is OK, update the PCM - Refer to: PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: Air Cleaner Area(2.0L Engine) , then recheck.
If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: Air Cleaner Area(2.0L Engine)
After Inspection
- SCS Mode Exit
