Ignition Timing Inspection (3.0L Engine): Inspection

How to use this manual .

NOTICE: 

If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before continuing with this inspection.

1. Ignition Timing - Inspect

   Preconditions 

   • No DTCs Set
   • Engine Warmed Up

     NOTE:  Warm up the engine by raising the engine speed around 3, 000 rpm until the cooling fan(s) comes on.

   • Idle Speed Normal Condition - Refer to: Idle Speed Inspection(3.0L Engine)
   • HDS Connected
   • SCS Shorted

   Procedure/Specifications 

   1. Start the engine.

   2. Connect the timing light (a) to the service loop (white tape) (b). Check the ignition timing under the following conditions.

   Specifications

   c	Pointer	No load Condition (headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, and air conditioner are turned off) At idle in P or N	The pointer and red mark should align.
   			Normal Mode	1-23 deg. BTDC
   d	RED Mark*		Sport Mode	0-16 deg. BTDC
   			Sport+ Mode	3-14 deg. BTDC

   *: RED mark is located at 5 deg. BTDC from WHITE mark.

   Result 

   • If the measurement is not within specifications, check the camshaft timing - Refer to: Camshaft Timing Inspection(3.0L Engine) .

     If the camshaft timing is OK, update the PCM - Refer to: PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: Radiator Area(3.0L Engine) , then recheck.

     If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: Radiator Area(3.0L Engine)
