Injection Pump Belt: Installation

  1. Ensure marks on pump sprocket, pump bracket, and pump housing are aligned. Install pump sprocket locking pin (2064). TDC mark on the flywheel should still aligned with pointer.
  2. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt one turn, then loosen sprocket by tapping with rubber hammer. Do not remove sprocket from camshaft. Hand tighten bolt until end play is eliminated but sprocket still spins freely.
  3. Install drive belt so there is no slack between the camshaft and pump sprockets or between pump and crankshaft sprockets. Tighten tensioner to keep belt firmly in place. Remove pin (2064) from pump sprocket.
  4. Install belt tension tester (VW 210). Adjust belt tensioner until tension tester reads 12-13. Tighten tensioner lock nut and camshaft sprocket bolt to 33 ft. lb. (45 N.m). Remove locking tool from camshaft.
  5. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions. Strike the belt with a rubber hammer between cam and pump sprockets and recheck belt tension. Readjust if necessary. Check and adjust injection pump timing.

  1. Install injection pump drive sprocket with belt. Tighten sprocket bolt until it is just possible to turn pump sprocket by hand. Check tension of belt with tool (VW 210), belt tension should be 12-13.
  2. If belt tension is not within specifications, loosen mounting bolts for pump bracket and adjust position of pump. Retest for proper belt tension. Check that crankshaft position is TDC of No.1 cylinder.
  3. Hold injection pump drive sprocket with tool (3036) and tighten retaining bolt to 72 ft. lb. (100 N.m). Remove locking pin from pump sprocket. Check and adjust injection pump timing. Install belt cover.
