Ignition System: Description
NOTE:
Ignition system on Audi Coupe GT and 5000S models equipped with 2.3L engine is controlled by the CIS-E III electronic control system. On Audi 5000CS Quattro and 5000CS Turbo models, ignition system is controlled through the CIS-E fuel control system. For additional information on these systems, see the appropriate BOSCH CIS-E or CIS-E III article in the FUEL SYSTEMS section.
The typical Bosch Hall Effect electronic ignition system consists of an ignition coil, distributor with Hall Effect sending unit, Hall ignition control unit (except Audi 5000CS Quattro and 5000CS turbo), vacuum and centrifugal advance mechanisms (some models).
Audi 4000S also incorporates a knock control unit. This amplifier is used to reduce ignition interference in the other electronic control systems of the vehicle.
