Mechanical Inspection: Compression

Checking engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge.

  1. Engine warmed up, coolant temperature approximately 174°F (80°C).
  2. Remove fuel pump fuse No. 17 (15-amp) from fuse block. See Figure .
  3. NOTE: Mark connectors to aid in reinstallation.
  4. Remove connector cover at rear of engine compartment. Disconnect harness connectors 5 and 6 to ignition coils. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
  5. Remove ignition coils cover, remove coils and remove spark plugs.
  6. Install compression gauge, hold throttle wide open.
  7. Operate starter until no further pressure increase is indicated on compression gauge. Record readings. See COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS  .

COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS (2.22L TURBO)

Application psi (kg/cm 2 )
Normal Compression Pressure 131-189 (9.2-13.2)
Minimum Compression Pressure 102 (7.2)
Maximum Variation Between Cylinders 44 (3.1)
