Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Function 03): Testing
- Connect (VAG 1551) scan tool. Indicated on display is 2 messages, on display line 1 - "VAG ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC". On the lower display line 2 messages will alternately between: "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" and "BLINK CODE OUTPUT". If there is NO display on scan tool, verify connection for scan tool is okay. See CONNECTING SCAN TOOL (VAG 1551) .
- Turn ignition on (DO NOT start).
- Operate (VAG 1551) scan tool according to display: Press button -1- to select "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" operating mode. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "INSERT ADDRESS WORD XX".
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to enter "ENGINE ELECTRONICS" address word 01. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "01-ENGINE ELECTRONICS".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "SCAN TOOL SENDS ADDRESS WORD 01".
- If display appears as shown - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT ANSWER". Press HELP button to print list of possible malfunctions.
- If "CONTROL MODULE DOES NOT ANSWER" is still displayed after repairing possible malfunction, check white DLC wiring. See CHECKING WHITE DLC WIRING under ECM VOLTAGE & GROUND CHECK. Check voltage supply to the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM). See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 65535 is displayed, ECM is malfunctioning. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION . After repairing possible malfunction: Again press buttons -0-and-1- to enter "ENGINE ELECTRONICS" address word 01.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- If one of the following displays appears as shown: Press HELP button to print list of possible malfunctions.
- "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "L WIRE NOT SWITCHING TO GROUND"
- "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "L WIRE NOT SWITCHING TO B+"
- "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "K WIRE NOT SWITCHING TO GROUND"
- "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "K WIRE NOT SWITCHING TO B+"
- After repairing possible malfunction: Again press buttons -0-and-1- to enter "ENGINE ELECTRONICS" address word 01. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER " "01-ENGINE ELECTRONICS ".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Display indicates ECM identification and coding. Display will read (for example) - " 4AO907551AA 2.21 R5 MOTR RHV HS D" "CODING 4". For ECM identification (version). See ECM IDENTIFICATION . Also see, ECM CODING .
- Press -right arrow- button. Display will read - " RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "SELECT FUNCTION XX"
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select "OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TEST" function 03. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TEST".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input. Display will read - "OUTPUT DTM" "INJECTOR CYLINDER 1-N30".
- At the throttle body, open and close throttle valve. See Figure . As soon as throttle valve returns to closed throttle position, fuel injector for cylinder No. 1 will cycle on and off 5 times, then Motronic ECM will automatically switch to next fuel injector in sequence.
- To switch to the next fuel injector WITHOUT checking it. Press -right arrow- button each time.
- Press -right arrow- button (display will change to the next DTM).
- Display will read - "OUTPUT DTM" "IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE -N71". The idle air control valve is triggered (clicks) until switched to the next output DTM. Press -right arrow- button.
- Display will read - "OUTPUT DTM" "EVAP CANISTER PURGE REGULATOR VALVE". This valve is triggered (clicks) until switched to the next output DTM. Press -right arrow- button.
- Display will read - "OUTPUT DTM" "WASTEGATE BY-PASS REGULATOR VALVE-N75". The control module will click until the -right arrow- button is pushed to end the Output DTM checks.
- Press -right arrow- button. Display will read - " RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "SELECT FUNCTION XX".
- If function 03 "OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE" is selected again, the output DTM can be repeated. If one of the components does not click, check the component and/or the control. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - S4 article.
NOTE:
Blue DLC connector is not used.
