Clearing Codes
CAUTION:
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory cannot be erase until it has first been checked (interrogated).
If using (VAG 1551) scan tool, follow manufacturers instructions for clearing codes. Go to step 1 . If using a generic scan tool, turn ignition off. Disconnect the scan tool, disconnect positive battery cable or disconnect ECM connector. Codes are now cleared from memory. After codes are erased, check basic engine settings (function 04) using (VAG 1551) scan tool. Test drive the vehicle. See TEST DRIVE .
- Connect (VAG 1551) scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES .
- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "ERASE DTC MEMORY" function 05.
- Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "05-ERASE DTC MEMORY".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- If display reads - "DTC MEMORY IS NOT ERASED". Press the -right arrow- button. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "SELECT FUNCTION XX". Repair malfunctions according to diagnostic trouble codes from scan tool printout.
- Check and erase DTC memory. This will erase any codes that were stored while connecting and disconnecting components during the repair.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "END OUTPUT" function 06. Display will read - "RAPID DATA TRANSFER" "06-END OUTPUT".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input. Test drive the vehicle for at least 5 minutes.
- Press -0- button twice to insert "AUTOMATIC TEST SEQUENCE" address word 00. Check DTC memory again to ensure that all DTCs have been eliminated.
NOTE:
If DTC memory has been successfully erased. Display will read - "DTC memory is erased".
NOTE:
Vehicles with automatic transmission: If a harness connector is disconnected or connected while the DTC memory is being checked (interrogated), the DTC "ENGINE/TRANSMISSION ELECTRICAL CONNECTION INTERRUPT" will be stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and must be erased.
