Tachometer Control Signal Checking

NOTE: All voltage and continuity tests should be performed with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless specifically stated differently in testing procedures. For help with diagnostic testing. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
NOTE: The Engine Control Module (ECM) outputs a control signal to the tachometer, which is located in the instrument cluster.

Only perform the following check if there is no tachometer reading.

  1. Connect (VAG 1598) test box, using (VAG 1598/5) adapter cable to ECM. See CONNECTING VAG 1598 TEST BOX .
  2. Connect (VW 1367) engine tester, to perform RPM measurement (refer to manufacturer's instructions).
  3. Using (VW 1594) connector test kit, connect signal wire (green terminal) to test box terminal No. 30.
  4. Run engine at idle. RPM must be displayed on (VW 1367) engine tester.
  5. If YES: Switch OFF engine and remove instrument cluster.
  6. Check continuity between ECM terminal No. 40 (terminal 40 on test box), and instrument cluster. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. If wiring is Okay: Repair malfunction in instrument cluster.
  8. If RPM is NOT displayed on (VW 1367) engine tester. Check for short circuit to positive or ground between ECM terminal No. 40 (terminal 40 on test box), and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
