Checking Wiring & Connections-To-Throttle Position Sensor

  1. Switch ignition OFF.
  2. NOTE: ECM remains disconnected.
  3. Connect (VAG 1598) test box to Engine Control Module (ECM) wiring harness using (VAG 1598/5) adapter cable. See CONNECTING VAG 1598 TEST BOX .
  4. Using wiring diagram, check following circuits for continuity or shorts, by testing at terminals indicated in table. See IDENTIFYING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR HARNESS CONNECTOR TERMINAL & VAG 1598 SOCKET NUMBER  table. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. NOTE: Use only gold replacement terminals when making repairs to TP sensor connectors.
  6. Repair open or short circuits as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Connect (VAG 1598/5) adapter cable to ECM. Switch ignition ON.
  8. Connect DVOM, switched to voltage range, in turn between:
    • Terminals No. 12 and 30.
    • Terminals No. 30 and 53.
    • Voltage must be 4.5-5.5 volts, each time.
  9. If voltage is incorrect (one or both specified values NOT obtained), replace ECM. After replacement of ECM, see ECM IDENTIFICATION and ECM CODING under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
