DTC P0501/16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance

NOTE: DTC is set after engine start when coolant temperature is more than 176°F (80°C) with engine speed between 1300-6000 RPM when Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal is less than one MPH during a deceleration fuel shut-off. Deceleration fuel shut-off must be longer then 3 seconds.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/19 test box to PCM wiring harness. Terminal assignments of test box are identical to PCM connectors "A", "B", "C", "D" and "E".
  2. Raise and support vehicle so left front wheel is free to rotate. Right front wheel must not rotate. With ignition on, connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between test box sockets 13C (signal) and 10D (B+). Voltage tester should light up at half strength. Rotate left front wheel by hand. Voltage tester should become brighter and flash.
  3. If voltage tester does not perform as specified, go to next step. If voltage tester performs as specified, circuit is okay. Erase DTC memory and test drive vehicle.
  4. Using DVOM, check wiring harness between test box socket 13X and VSS, and test box socket C13 and VSS. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  section. Repair wiring harness as necessary. If wiring is okay, replace VSS. Perform steps 2) and 3) again. After replacing VSS, if voltage tester does not perform as specified, replace faulty PCM. Erase DTC memory and test drive vehicle.
