Engine Control Module
The Engine Control Module (ECM) also may be called the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is the "brains" of the engine management system. The ECM monitors sensors, actuators and valves input/output signals (some signals all the time and the others under specified conditions). When the ECM detects any irregularity in the engine management system, it sets a DTC, then memorizes the DTC and sends the command to turn the MIL "ON".
The diagnostic results can be read through the use of a Generic Scan Tool (GST) by connect it to the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC), this allows technicians to obtain the DTC's and proceed to repair the vehicle. The DTC's will remain in the ECM memory as long as battery power is maintained. The DTC will be erased when the battery negative terminal or the ECM connector is disconnected or they can be erased by the Generic Scan Tool. In short, the ECM performs a wide variety of functions that are necessary to operate a vehicle.
