Front Corner Radar, Calibrating
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Calibration Tool: VAS6350A
- Calibration Tool - Spacing Laser: VAS6350/2A
- Calibration Tool - Lane Change Calibration Tool: VAS6350/4
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
Calibration/Adjustment Must be Performed if:
- "No or incorrect basic setting/adaptation" is actively entered in the DTC memory of the Control Module for Left Front Object Detection Radar Sensor -J1088- /Control Module for Right Front Object Detection Radar Sensor -J1089-.
- The Control Module for Left Front Object Detection Radar Sensor -J1088- /Control Module for Right Front Object Detection Radar Sensor -J1089- was removed and installed or replaced.
- The front bumper cover has been damaged or replaced.
- The front bumper cover was painted near the control modules while installed.
TIP:
Calibrating both control modules for object detection is not necessarily required. Depending on the conditions (for example, only one of the two object detection control modules was replaced, or the bumper was only painted on one side), it is sufficient to only calibrate the affected control module.
Preparing for Calibration
- Calibration Tool - Linear Laser: VAS6350/3A
- With "laser protective eyewear"
- On the : VAS6350A
- Refer to : VAS6350/3A Owner's Manual for handling.
- Calibration Tool: VAS6350A
- Measure the distance to the reference point on the vehicle, dimension -b-. Refer to FRONT CORNER RADAR, CALIBRATING - Dimension -b- = 1000 ± 10 mm
- Must be parallel with the vehicle
- Dimension -a- side sill area = dimension -a- front bumper cover area
- Level
- On the Calibration Tool: VAS6350A
- To check the horizontal position of the Calibration Tool: VAS6350A
- Reference Point on Vehicle
- At the start of the seam on the bumper cover
- Calibration Tool - Lane Change Calibration Tool: VAS6350/4
- If installed correctly, the vehicle electrical system voltage wire must be connected to the calibration device at the lower left.
- Distance from the upper edge of the : VAS6350/4 to the floor: dimension -c-. Refer to FRONT CORNER RADAR, CALIBRATING - Height adjustment from the upper edge of the : VAS6350/4 to the workshop floor: dimension -c- = 810 mm.
- Scale
- Adjust the distance of the mount for the Calibration Tool - Lane Change Calibration Tool: VAS6350/4
- Dimension -d- on the scale. Refer to FRONT CORNER RADAR, CALIBRATING - Side adjustment on the scale -arrow- : dimension -d- = 540 mm.
- Calibration Tool - Spacing Laser: VAS6350/2A
- For distance measurement
- Refer to the Calibration Tool - Spacing Laser: VAS6350/2A Operating Instructions for handling.
Preliminary Work
- Move the vehicle onto a solid, flat surface.
- Move the wheels so that they are in a straight-ahead position.
- For vehicles with rear axle steering, steer the rear axle to the zero position. Refer to Rear Axle Steering . This is the only way to ensure that the rear axle steering is in the straight-ahead position.
- Vehicles without air suspension: deflect the springs several times and let settle.
- Electromechanical parking brake applied.
- Vehicle exterior lamps switched off.
- All vehicle doors closed.
- Remove the label with the metal foil from the bumper cover, if necessary.
- Connect the battery charger for the battery support mode. Refer to BATTERY, CHARGING .
- Before starting the calibration/adjustment, check the DTC memory and correct all displayed entries.
Procedure
-- Position the : VAS6350A parallel to the vehicle.
- Dimension -a- side sill area = dimension -a- front bumper cover area
-- Move the level -arrow- on the : VAS6350A so that it balances horizontally by turning the plastic feet.
-- Wear "laser protective eyewear".
-- Turn on the : VAS6350/3A on the : VAS6350A .
-- Align the : VAS6350A .
- The linear laser beam must run through the center point of the front wheel
- The parallel alignment of the : VAS6350A to the vehicle must be maintained, dimension -a- = dimension -a-.
-- Attach the : VAS6350/4 to the : VAS6350A and align.
- Side adjustment on the scale -arrow- : dimension -d- = 540 mm.
- Height adjustment from the upper edge of the : VAS6350/4 to the workshop floor: dimension -c- = 810 mm.
-- Connect the : VAS6350/4 -1- to the vehicle electrical system voltage and switch it on at the voltage switch -2-.
- The green LED -4- must turn on.
-- If the red LED -3- turns on, then check the : VAS6350/4 -1-.
-- Using the : VAS6350/2A , measure the distance from the : VAS6350/4 -3- to the reference point on the vehicle and adjust to dimension -b-. Refer to the : VAS6350/2A Operating Instructions.
- Reference point: at the beginning of the seam on the bumper cover
- Dimension -b- = 1000 ± 10 mm
-- To adjust the dimension -b-, move the : VAS6350A sideways.
- Parallel alignment and orientation of the : VAS6350A must not change.
Calibration Procedure
The following should not occur during the calibration procedure:
- No metallic reflectors may be located within a 2 m radius of the calibration tool (meaning tool carts, metal cabinets).
- Vehicle doors must not be opened or closed.
- People must not sit in the vehicle.
- People must not go between the vehicle and the : VAS6350/4 .
-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Switch the ignition on.
