Engine, Removing, AUDI A3 From My 2021: Procedure
- The engine is removed downward together with the transmission.
- During installation, all cable ties and heat shields must be installed at the same location.
Vehicles with starter generator:
-- De-energize the 48 Volt system and disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
Continuation for All Vehicles:
The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm. There is a risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
Scalding the skin and other parts of the body is possible.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening it.
-- Open the coolant reservoir cap -arrow-.
-- Remove the subframe without the steering gear. Refer to SUBFRAME WITHOUT STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 2- and remove the air duct hose.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
-- Disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray :VAS 6208 underneath.
-- Lift the clamp -3- and remove the lower right coolant hose from the radiator and drain the coolant.
-- Loosen the coolant hose -arrow-, remove the coolant hose and hold it toward the rear and let the coolant drain.
-- Carefully pull the engine cover off the ball pins one after the other -arrows-. Do not pull sharply on the engine cover or only pull it to one side (example illustration below).
Vehicles with Secondary Air System:
-- Press the release buttons on both sides and remove the secondary air injection suction line -2-.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the vacuum hose -1- at the same time to not damage it.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -3- and remove the air duct hose.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
-- Disconnect and remove the air filter housing -4- from the battery tray.
-- Free up the coolant hose -2-.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -3-.
-- Unclip and remove the air duct -1- from the lock carrier.
-- Release the retainer -arrow A- and open the cap at the Fuse Panel 4 -ST4- -arrow B-.
-- Remove the B+ wire -1- and free it up.
-- Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolt -1-, turn the connection in the -direction of the arrow- and remove.
Vehicles without parking/auxiliary heater:
-- Place a cloth under the heater core for any leaking coolant.
-- Lift the clips -arrows- and remove the coolant hoses from the heater core for the heater.
-- Hold the coolant hoses downward and allow the coolant to drain.
Vehicles with parking/auxiliary heater:
-- Place a cloth under the heater core for any leaking coolant.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -1-, lift the clamps -arrows- and remove the coolant hoses.
Vehicles with a particulate filter:
-- Loosen the hose clamps -2- and remove the hoses.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and free up the control lines (example illustration above).
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the connectors from the bracket and disconnect them, and then free up the wires (example illustration above):
- For the Oxygen Sensor 1 after Catalytic Converter -GX7-
- For the Oxygen Sensor 1 before Catalytic Converter -GX10-
-- Remove the bolt -1- and free up the control lines.
Risk of injury due to flying soot particles.
Irritation and injury to skin and eyes possible.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear safety gloves.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and the screw-type clamp.
-- Loosen the bolt -2-, then disengage the catalytic converter upward and tie it up. (Shown with the engine removed.)
-- Place a cloth under the separating point to catch any escaping fuel.
-- Disconnect the fuel hose -1- and remove the hose -2- for the EVAP system. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .
-- Open the tab -3- and free up the hoses.
-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 2- and remove the coolant hoses.
Vehicles with starter generator:
-- Unclip the cover -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and nuts -2- and free up the wire.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Lift the clamp -arrow- and remove the left upper coolant hose from the radiator.
- Use the Pry Lever :80 - 200 for removing the spiral clips in the following steps.
Version 1:
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-. Refer to Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the connectors -2 and 3- from the bracket and disconnect them and then free up the wires.
Version 2:
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-. Refer to Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the connectors -2 and 3- from the bracket and disconnect them and then free up the wires.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Disconnect the wire -arrow- for the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Hydraulic Pump 1 -V475-.
-- Disconnect the starter connector -arrow-.
-- Remove the selector lever cable from the transmission and pull it out of the cable bracket. Refer to SHIFT MECHANISM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of destroying due to electrostatic discharge.
- Do not touch the connector terminals by hand.
- Touch a ground (for example the hoist) and discharge the static electricity.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission by turning the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and remove.
-- Loosen the bolts -arrows- for the transmission mount -1- approximately two turns.
-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the ground wire.
-- Loosen the bolts -arrows- for the engine mount approximately two turns.
-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 2- and remove the air duct hose.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
Vehicles with Secondary Air System:
-- Press the release buttons on both sides and remove the pressure line -2-.
-- Press the release buttons on both sides and disconnect and remove the suction line -3- for secondary air injection.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Disconnect the connector -1- for the radiator fan, to do this push the clip in the -direction of arrow A- and push the retainer downward.
-- Press the left and right fan shroud locking tabs at the same time -arrow B- and disengage and remove the fan shroud upward from the radiator.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -2-.
-- Free up the coolant hose on the clip -3-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Charge Air Pressure Sensor -G31-.
-- Remove the front air duct pipe.
-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set :VAS 6122 .
Risk of destroying a used ribbed belt by reversing the running direction.
- Mark the running direction before removal.
- Pay attention to the running direction when reinstalling.
Vehicles with generator:
-- Turn the tensioner clockwise -arrow- to release the tension on the ribbed belt.
-- Secure the tensioner using the Locking Pin :T10060 A .
-- Remove the ribbed belt.
Vehicles with starter generator:
-- To release the tension of the ribbed belt, turn the tensioner using the Wrench - 21mm : T40263 -3- and the Adapter :T40263/1 -2- clockwise -arrow-.
-- Secure the tensioner using the Locking Pin :T10060 A .
-- Remove the ribbed belt.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the A/C compressor with the refrigerant hoses still connected from the bracket and tie it up on the right side. Refer to A/C COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET .
AWD vehicles with particulate filter:
-- Remove the nuts -arrows-, free up the bracket -1- for the control line and push it to the side.
All AWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the bolts -A and B Arrows- and the heat shield -1-.
-- Mark the position of flexible disc and the bevel box flange to each other for reinstallation -arrows-.
-- Using a lever to counterhold the triangular flange, remove the driveshaft from the bevel box -arrows-.
-- Press the engine/transmission assembly slightly forward (toward the front end) and remove the driveshaft from the bevel box.
Leaks due to a damaged seal.
- Press the driveshaft rearward horizontally.
- If the gasket is damaged, the driveshaft must be replaced.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission/bevel box. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Tie up the drive axles to the rear.
- Be careful not to damage the protective coating on the drive axles.
-- Remove bolt -arrow- and push the bracket for the wiring harness to the side.
-- Fasten the Adapter :T10359/3 on the Engine/Gearbox Jack - Engine Support :T10359A as shown.
-- Tighten the Engine/Gearbox Jack - Pin :T10359/2 onto the engine bracket with the securing element -A- from the Transmission Support :3282 .
-- Attach the Engine/Gearbox Jack - Engine Support :T10359A -4- with the bolt -arrow A- to 20 Nm on the cylinder block and secure with the support element -arrow B- from the Transmission Support :3282 .
-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack -2- on the Engine Bracket and raise the engine/transmission assembly slightly.
- 1 - Adapter :T10359/3
- 3 - Engine/Gearbox Jack - Pin :T10359/2
-- Completely remove the engine mount bolts -arrows-.
-- Completely remove the bolts -arrows- for the transmission mount -1-.
Risk of damaging the lines and hoses, as well as the engine compartment by lowering the engine/transmission assembly.
- Make sure all connections between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.
- Carefully lower and guide the engine/transmission assembly out of the engine compartment.
-- Lower the engine/transmission assembly.
