Injection Pump Timing

  1. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC and intake valve of No. 6 cylinder at overlap. Remove central plug in injection pump head.
  2. Screw Adapter (13 5 530), in tapped bore for plug and mount dial gauge with at least .078" (2 mm) pre-load. Turn crankshaft only in engine direction of rotation until dial gauge displays lowest value. Check all 6 lobes and zero out on lowest.
  3. Continue turning crankshaft until crankshaft is at TDC on No. 1 cylinder and hold with Special Tool (11 2 300 3). Dial gauge should read .025" (.65 mm) with less than 10,000 miles on vehicle. With more than 10,000 miles dial gauge should read .024" (.63 mm). See Fig 1.

  4. If necessary, correct by turning injection pump until specified value of .025" (.65 mm) is reached. If value is too small, swing pump toward engine. If value is too large, swing pump away from engine.
  5. Tighten mounting nuts after finishing adjustments. Tighten nut on front flange on inside of engine first. Then tighten nut on front flange on outside next. Tighten both rear nuts last. Turn crankshaft and recheck adjustment.
