Fuel Injection System - Diesel: Description
The BMW 6-cylinder diesel fuel injection system consists of fuel tank, fuel filter, Bosch distributor-type injection pump, glow plugs, throttling pintle injection nozzles and a centrifugal governor. See Fig 1.
A vane-type fuel pump, built into the injection pump, supplies fuel from tank to fuel filter and then to injection pump. Injection pump supplies fuel to nozzles under high pressure. Excess fuel is returned to fuel tank by return lines.
The glow plug system used on the 2.4L BMW diesel consists of 6 glow plugs located on the left side of the engine. A glow plug control module is located on the cowl panel apron. A glow plug temperature sensor is located on the left side of the cylinder head. A "Wait-to-Start" indicator lamp is located in the lower warning indicator module in the center of the instrument panel.
