Steering Pump Pressure

NOTE: For diagnosis of the 735i, 735iL and 750iL Servotronic electronic steering control components, see appropriate ELECTRONIC - SERVOTRONIC article.
  1. Discharge accumulator by operating brake pedal 20 times. Disconnect pressure line from pump. Connect pump pressure line to gauge.
  2. Disconnect pressure line from control regulator. Connect it to pressure gauge. Shut cut-off valve on gauge. Open shut-off valve on pressure line.
  3. Bleed system with engine running at idle. Close valve in pressure line for 10 seconds maximum while reading pressure. On all models except 735i, 735iL, 750iL and L7, pressure should be 1422-1564 psi (100-110 kg/cm2 ).
  4. On 735i, 735iL, 750iL and L7, pressure should be 1849-1991 psi (130-140 kg/cm2 ). If pressure is not within limits, check belt tightness. Repair or replace pump if belt adjustment does not remedy problem.
