11 00 050 Removing and installing engine (N55)

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

To remove or install the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.

Release screws (1, 2).

Remove heater end panel (3).

Installation note: 

Make sure heater end panel is correctly seated.

M6x20 bolt must be fitted in middle.

Support engine with special tool 11 7 310 on steering box.

Release screws (1) of A/C lines and disconnect.

Do not  remove air conditioning compressor.

Detach right pressure pipe (1) from charge air cooler.

Release screws (1).

Remove the protective plate (2).

NOTE: Graphic (all-wheel drive vehicle).

Unlock and detach fuel and tank ventilation line (1).

Detach vacuum hose (2) for engine mount.

Release power steering pump (1) and set down on front axle support.

NOTE: Do not  disconnect hydraulic lines.
Shown without air conditioning compressor for purposes of clarity.

Attach special tool 11 8 680 to rear lifting eye (gearbox side).

Push ball lock pin (1) in direction of arrow and hold down until special tool 11 8 680 X is positioned in lifting eye.

Pull ball lock pin (1) outward in direction of arrow until both balls (2) are pushed outward.

Installation note: 

Checking the correct installation of the special tool 11 8 680 .

There must be a 6.5 mm gap between ball lock pin (1) and ball lock pin housing.

The gap dimension can be checked using a 6.5 mm drill.

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine lifter.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets of special tool 11 8 680 only (see arrow).

Release nut on engine mount on left and right.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Installation note: 

Replace self-locking nuts.

Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .

Screw towing eye into cylinder head.

Tightening torque: 11 12 5AZ .

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets (1) only.

Lift engine out with engine lifter.

Assemble engine.

Check function of DME.
