Drive Assembly Check
- Drive assembly clutch pinion should turn freely in overrunning direction (clockwise) only. Check pinion teeth for chips, cracks or excessive wear. Chipped teeth may indicate defective ring gear.
- Check drive assembly for slipping. With drive assembly attached to armature, cover armature with shop towels and secure in a vise. Using a 12-point socket and a torque wrench, turn pinion counterclockwise. Pinion should lock and withstand a torque of 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) If pinion slips before 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) is reached, replace drive assembly.
