Inspection (Column Jacket)

  1. Check capsules on steering column bracket assembly. Capsules should be within .062" (1.59 mm) from bottom of slots. See Figure . If capsules are not within specification, replace bracket if bracket is bolted to column jacket, or replace column jacket if bracket is welded to column jacket.
  2. Check for contact between bolt head and surface "A" on capsules. If bolt head contacts surface "A", shear load will increase, preventing column collapse upon impact. If contact is made, replace bracket or column jacket.
  3. Remove lower bearing from bottom of steering column. Using the COLUMN JACKET COLLAPSE MEASUREMENTS  table as a guide, measure distance between points on column jacket as specified in illustration. See Figure . If distance measured is not as specified, replace column jacket.
