Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
- If equipped, remove the steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1) , Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40) .
- Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (5) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
- Remove the steering gear boot outer clamp (4).
- Cut the steering gear boot inner clamp (2).
Discard the inner clamp.
- Remove the steering gear boot (3) from the steering gear (1).
- Inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1) , Steering Gear Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40) .
