Pulse Air Solenoid Check
- Remove air cleaner to gain access to pulse air solenoid hose. Make sure that hose is properly connected. Turn ignition off for 2 minutes.
- Start engine and feel for vacuum pulsations at end of pulse air hose. Pulsations should occur for at least 20 seconds after engine starts.
- If pulsations are felt as described, pulse air system is operating properly. If pulsations are not felt or do not last for at least 20 seconds, check for at least 10 in. Hg vacuum at pulse air solenoid with engine idling.
- If there is not at least 10 in. Hg vacuum, repair vacuum hose(s). If vacuum is okay, turn ignition switch on without starting engine.
- Ground test terminal of assembly line data link (ALDL) inside vehicle. Connect test light between pulse air solenoid connector terminals with connector disconnected.
- If test light does not come on, proceed to step 9). If test light does come on, proceed to step 7).
- Remove ground from test terminal of ALDL while watching test light. If light stays on, check for a grounded wire from pulse air solenoid to electronic control module (ECM) terminal 14. If there is no ground in the circuit, replace ECM.
- If the test light went out in step 7), solenoid or solenoid connector is defective.
- If the test light did not come on in step 6), connect a test light between ground and each solenoid harness connector terminal. If test light comes on at 1 terminal only, proceed to step 11).
- If test light comes on at both terminals, repair short in power feed wire. Also check ECM for damage. If test light did not come on at either terminal, repair open in circuit from solenoid to ignition switch.
- If test light came on at 1 terminal only, check for an open wire from solenoid to ECM terminal 14. If wire is okay, check resistance of pulse air solenoid.
- If resistance is under 20 ohms, replace solenoid and ECM. If resistance is over 20 ohms, repair ECM connector or replace ECM.
