Removal & Installation (Except Diesel)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express, 2001 GMC Savana Special, 2001 GMC Savana Camper Special, and 2001 GMC Savana. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Service of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) programming. If diagnostic procedures call for PCM to be replaced, PCM should be inspected first to see if the correct part is being used. If the correct part is being used, remove faulty PCM and install new service PCM.

Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Release spring latch from PCM. Lift PCM from mounting tray. See Fig 1 . Remove PCM from engine compartment. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten PCM connector end fasteners to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m). Program as necessary. See PROGRAMMING  .
