Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.

  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement
  4. NOTE:
    • Remove the fuel rail assembly carefully in order to prevent damage to the injector electrical connector terminals and the injector spray tips. Support the fuel rail after the fuel rail is removed in order to avoid damaging the fuel rail components.
    • Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system in order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering open pipes and passages.
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .
  6. Clean the fuel rail assembly with a spray type engine cleaner, GM X 30A or equivalent, if necessary. Follow the package instructions. Do not soak the fuel rail in liquid cleaning solvent.

  8. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipes (2, 3) from the fuel rail. Refer to Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Metal Collar) .
  9. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) air tube from the cam cover.

  11. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors (1) from each fuel injector (2).
  12. Lay the harness aside.

  14. Remove the engine wiring harness from the fuel rail stud.

  16. Remove the fuel rail attaching studs.

  18. Remove the fuel rail.
  19. Remove the injector lower O-ring seal from the spray tip end of each injector.
  20. Discard the O-ring seals.
  21. If replacing the fuel rail, remove the fuel injectors. Refer to Fuel Injector Replacement .
