Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. If equipped with the 4.6L (LH2) engine, install the left rearward lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
  4. Install the power steering gear retaining bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 180 N.m (134 lb ft).

  5. If equipped with AWD, lower the differential housing.

  7. If equipped with AWD, tighten the right lower engine mount to the frame nut.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 80 N.m (59 lb ft).

  9. If equipped with AWD, remove the support from the bottom of the differential housing.
  10. If equipped with the 4.6L (LH2) engine, install the left brake line to the brake hose.

    Tighten:  Tighten the line to 27 N.m (20 lb in).

  12. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear.

  14. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear retaining bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

  15. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.

  17. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckles.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nuts to 70 N.m (52 lb ft).

  19. Connect the variable effort steering harness connector.

  21. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  22. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  23. Install the tire and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  24. Lower the vehicle.

  26. Remove the J 42640  from the steering column.
  27. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  28. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
