Enhanced Diagnostics
The ENHANCED DIAGNOSTICS feature is used to analyze specific fault occurrence information. Fault occurrence information is stored for first 5 fault codes stored and very last fault code stored. Fault occurrence information stored consists of fault code number, number of failure occurrences and number of drive cycles since fault first and last occurred. A drive cycle occurs when ignition is turned on and vehicle is driven faster than 10 MPH.
However, when a fault code is present, drive cycle counter will increment by turning ignition on and off. The first 5 fault codes are stored in order of occurrence. The order in which a fault code is stored can be useful in diagnosing ABS system, determining (as an example) if an intermittent wheel speed sensor problem later becomes completely open.
During difficult diagnosis problems, this information can be used to identify fault occurrence trends. As an example, if a fault occurs one out of 20 driving cycles, this identifies a unusual event which took place causing a fault code to set (i.e. large speed bump). This fault code was likely caused by an intermittently open electrical connection. Duplicating the condition which caused fault code to set may be impossible. It is unlikely that diagnosing fault code with fault code chart will find any problem with vehicle. In this case refer to Diagnostic Aids in appropriate fault code chart.
Even if a fault occurred 3 out of 15 driving cycles, it is unlikely that diagnosing fault code with fault code chart will result in a repair. Duplicating the condition which caused fault code to set may be impossible. These intermittent fault codes will have to be diagnosed over time, referencing past customer visits and arranging future customer visits to identify cause of failure.
If a fault occurs 10 out of 20 driving cycles, there's a good chance that diagnosing fault code with fault code chart will result in a repair. Duplicating the condition which caused fault code to set may be easy.
If a fault occurred 10 out of 20 driving cycles, but has not reoccurred for the last 10 driving cycles, this means an environmental change occurred or customer had vehicle repaired 10 driving cycles ago. Diagnosis may not be necessary after confirming with customer that vehicle was repaired elsewhere.
